Using Whole-Body Orientation for Virtual Reality Interaction
When interacting in the real world, it is common to remember locations of objects based on our own body previous locations and postures. In this paper we discuss the benefits of the whole-body awareness in 3d interactive applications. We propose a technique for navigation and selection in 3d environments which uses an optical tracking system to provide whole-body position and orientation. We explore the peephole metaphor with a tablet pc to artificially enlarge the display and interaction area. In the application implemented to prove the proposed concepts, the tablet is held by the participant who moves it around and points it in any direction for visualization and interaction.
Interacting through Spatially Aware Displays
In many real life situations, people work together using their own computers. Such situations always involve exchanging digital objects. It is then a natural idea to enlarge the view of individual virtual spaces so that people may exchange objects in such workspace taking advantage of the collaborators’ physical proximity. In this work we propose a means to allow people’s collaboration through the interaction with objects in a common virtual workspace. We developed such approach as an application based on tablet pcs using their several embodied resources. The concepts of dynamic multiple displays and real world position tracking were used, and a multiplayer game was implemented to demonstrate how users can exchange information through intercommunicating tablets. Conclusions are drawn regarding the impact of the new paradigm of extended multi-user workspaces.
Simulating minimally invasive surgery: create and touch your own virtual liver
Minimally invasive surgery includes a number of advanced surgical techniques which compared with conventional techniques are less aggressive to the patient, allowing for faster recovery. As these procedures are complex, computational tools as surgical simulators are being used in the process of training new surgeons and training old surgeons in new techniques. Laparoscopy is one of such minimally invasive techniques. This video is a walkthrough over the process of creating a laparoscopic surgery simulator. Image processing, geometric modeling, graphics rendering, physics-based deformation and human-computer interaction with force feedback are steps in the process. This is an example of video-games getting into serious business.
